2012 ICC Americas U-18 Match Play Day 5: Bermuda vs. USA

Good morning from the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida. Peter Della Penna here at the ground where there's been some morning rain. We're going to have a slightly delayed start as a result. The last I heard is that play has been pushed back to 10:30 a.m. Some fresh football yard marker lines have been painted on the outfield south of the square. There have been football goalposts/uprights stationed beyond the east and west boundaries all week long. Apparently there is a summer semi-pro football league with four teams in south Florida.

Because this cricket specific facility isn't used for cricket all that much, they have to find other ways to bring in revenue for renting it out. In the past there have been rugby and soccer matches played inside here and now semi-pro gridiron is the latest part-time tenant. The next football game is scheduled for tomorrow/Saturday night inside the stadium, I believe for 7 pm according to the promoter who was in here a few days ago. So tomorrow's match between USA and Canada is scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. start and the football promoter was a little antsy to make sure the cricket wraps up by 5 pm so they can get the stadium ready for the football game. His eyes nearly popped out of his head when we told him the cricket matches being played this week can take seven hours to complete.

The USA players are ready to take the field, as are the umpires, but the groundsman is still marking the 15 yard circle to mark where two fielders needs to be inside in a catching position during the first 10 overs.

Another fresh pitch is being used today. The one yesterday was being used for the first time and only got 28 overs of play yet they are using another fresh one for today's match. It's the third pitch prepared this week. The first pitch was used for the first three matches.

Shaquille Jones and Christian Burgess are the two openers today for Bermuda. William White had opened in Bermuda's first two matches and is in the XI today. Jones and Burgess had each opened once with White and now they both will open together. Arsh Buch to open the bowling for USA from the North End, left arm slow medium seam to Jones, a left hand bat, with Taylor up to the stumps. Randall Wilson is at second slip and a short cover is in place for the other catching position for the first 10 overs. DROPPED! Short and wide, Jones went after it and struck the ball toward Vibhav Altekar on the circle. It came to him at thigh height and he spilled an absolute sitter. Wide, short outside off, left alone. DROPPED! Two, fullish length outside off, Jones goes to drive and gets a thick edge high to Wilson at second slip and it bursts through his hands as he jumped in the air, the ball goes toward third man. It was a much more difficult chance than Altekar's but he still got two hands to it. Dot, full and pushed to Amarnauth Persaud at short cover. Dot. Dot, full outside off and left. Dot, full outside off and pushed to cover. Bermuda 3/0 in 1.

Randall Wilson to open from the Pavilion End, right arm slow medium over the stumps to Christian Burgess, another left hand bat with Taylor up to the stumps. Second slip is positioned along with short cover, Tariq. Wide, full and way way outside off, nearly off the pitch. Dot, full outside off and left. Dot, low full toss well outside off, driven hard but right to Varadarajan at mid off. OUT! Short on off stump, Burgess went for a flat-footed pull and bottom edged it right onto his stumps. So Bermuda loses their first wicket with the score on 4 for the second day in a row. Burgess gone for a three-ball duck, Bermuda 4/1 in 1.3 overs. William White comes in at three, right hand bat. Two, good length ball on the legs, White checks his flick to the leg side and the ball spoons up high in the air but over square leg, hardly a convincing shot. Dot, yorker length ball outside off that White inside edges onto his feet, nearly another batsman playing on for Bermuda. Dot, good length ball defended to the bowler. Bermuda 6/1 in 2.

Buch to Jones. Dot, full on the stumps, driven to A Persaud at short cover. Dot, full toss at knee height clipped to Tariq at short midwicket. Single, full outside off, driven to long off, who along with deep midwicket are the two men out of the circle for Jones. Long leg the only man out for White. Dot, full and defended to midwicket. Dot, full and wide, goes to drive and misses. The umpires now have a chat about something before play resumes for the final ball of the over. OUT! Full on the stumps, White played across trying to flick to midwicket and was very unbalanced. It was going to hit the stumps, only question was whether it pitched in line or outside leg with Buch a left armer coming over the stumps to the right hand batsman. The umpire says it was in line. White out for 2, Bermuda 7/2 in 3 overs.

Tre Manders comes in off strike to start the fourth over. Wilson to Jones. Bermuda could be in a massive hole had Altekar held onto the chance on the first ball of the innings offered by Jones. Dot, full and driven to cover. Dot, full and clipped to midwicket. Single, full and driven to cover, misfield by Kankanala allows a run. Manders a right hander. FOUR! Full toss at knee height outside off driven straight down the ground, Varadarajan runs from mid on to save it and looked like he had pulled it back in from the rope but the umpire doesn't agree. Varadarajan isn't happy. Dot, full and clipped to midwicket. Dot, good length ball gets some extra bounce and the ball goes off Manders' gloves as he went back to defend and lobs up toward silly point, well enough away from the man at short cover to fall safely. Bermuda 12/2 in 4.

Buch to Jones. Single, full and driven to long off. Dot, full and driven to mid off. OUT! Full and wide outside off, Manders drives but doesn't get his foot anywhere near the ball, back knee bent against the pitch, he gets underneath the ball and spoons it straight to Zahib Tariq on the circle at cover and he takes a straightforward catch at chest height with fingers pointed to the sky. Manders out for 4, USA doesn't give him a second life today. Bermuda 13/3 in 4.3 overs. Joshua Gilbert, the Bermuda U-18 captain, is the new man in, right hand bat. Wide, full and down leg. Dot, full on the stumps, defended to square leg. Two, full outside off, Gilbert goes to drive and french cuts it through Taylor's legs as it just misses the stumps and Ryan Persaud chases it down at long leg after circling around from third man. Dot, full and defended. Bermuda 16/3 in 5.

Wilson to Jones. No ball and FOUR! Chest high full toss on the legs and not very quick, Jones swivels and scoops it high over fine leg and it carries easily over the rope, the umpire signals four instead of six though. Looked like it cleared the rope by four or five yards from the view up top here. Dot, full and driven to cover. Dot, full on the stumps, defended to Wilson. Dot, good length ball on off stump, defended to Wilson. Two, full on the legs, clipped cleanly behind square for a pair. Dot, full and driven to point. Dot, full outside off and left. Bermuda 23/3 in 6.

Wilson to Jones. Wide, short outside off, signaled an extra by the umpire. Dot, good length on the stumps, defended to short cover. Wide, short outside off, too wide to play a shot. Dot, yorker length ball kept out to short cover. Dot, full outside off, pushed to point. Single, short on the legs, goes to pull and gets a thin edge toward fine leg. Dot, full and defended. Dot, full and driven to cover. Bermuda 28/3 in 8.

Buch to Jones. Single, full on the legs, clipped to midwicket. Dot, full outside off and left. Dot, full on the legs, driven to mid on. Dot, full and wide, left alone, lucky it wasn't called a wide. Dot, full and wide again, left again. Dot, full on off, driven to mid off. Bermuda 29/3 in 9.
