2012 ICC Americas U-18 Match Play: Bermuda vs. Canada

Good morning here from the CBRP in Lauderhill, Florida. Peter Della Penna at the ground and I'll be bringing live coverage of the matches all week long. USA is the first team with a bye as Canada and Bermuda get underway today. Canada won the toss and elected to field first. Don't have the full starting XI's but can tell you that William White and Christian Burgess are opening the batting for Bermuda and Amanpal Gillar is opening the bowling for Canada, right arm medium from the Pavilion End bowling to wide.

Gillar to White, right hand bat. Wide, full and well outside off. Wide, full and swinging away again outside off. Wide, another one well wide outside off. Dot, good length outside off and left. Dot, good length left alone again. Dot, full and very wide, lucky not to be called a wide. Dot, fullish on the stumps, played through the shot early and a leading edge spoons up between cover and point. Two, given more width, connects behind point and they run an easy two. Dot. Bermuda 5/0 in 1.

Abrash Khan to open the bowling from the North/Lauderhill End, right arm medium to the left hander Burgess. Leg bye, good length on the hips, misses a flick and it goes to fine leg. Wide, full and well outside off. Two, good length on the legs, flicked square and fine leg circles around to cut it off. Dot, full and defended. Wide, full and left way outside off. Dot, full and pushed to cover. Dot, short outside off, left alone. Single, full and clipped to the leg side. Bermuda 11/0 in 2.

Gillar to White. Leg bye. Dot. FOUR! Full toss outside off cracked past point and it races away. Dot, good length outside off cuts Burgess in two. Dot, full outside off and left alone. Leg bye, full on the legs, goes off the pad to fine leg. Bermuda 17/0 in 3.

Khan to Burgess. Wide, full outside off and left, called a wide. Dot. Dot, full outside off, goes to defend and is beaten. Two, full and stroked through the off side, cut off well inside the rope. Dot. FOUR! Waist high full toss outside off, very easily could have been called a no ball on height, regardless it's hammered through the covers for a crisp four. Dot, good length ball outside off, Burgess flashes and misses. Bermuda 24/0 in 4.

Gillar to White. Wide, full toss sprayed down leg side. Leg umpire has to fix the bails as they keep falling off, a decent breeze blowing through the ground. Dot, full and speared into the legs, misses a flick, big LBW shout denied. The ball needed to swing back in to get that decision but it just kept going on with the angle and would have missed leg stump. Two, full on the legs, flicked to fine leg on the rope. Two, full toss on the knees slapped through midwicket but not timed well and it stops 10 yards from the rope. Single, good length on the stumps, White through early with the flick to midwicket and a leading edge flies over gully to third man. Gillar around the wicket to Burgess. Dot, short outside off, prodded to point. Dot, full and very wide, left alone. Bermuda 30/0 in 5.

Khan to White. Dot, good length ball defended to cover. Single, good length on the stumps, defended to cover where the fielder got too excited and threw wildly at the non-striker's stumps needlessly and an overthrow results. Single, full outside off, stroked in the air just short of the man diving at cover and it goes under him to allow the run. Dot, short of a length outside off, White fishes at it but is late. Wide, full and swinging down leg. Two, full outside off, pushed through the covers and they scamper back for a sharp second. Two, full on the legs, flicked crisply behind square but the outfield is a bit sluggish and it stays short of the rope. Bermuda 37/0 in 6.

Bowling change at the Pavilion End. Bakshpreet Gill on in place of Gillar, right arm medium around the stumps to Burgess. Dot, full and defended to point. Dead ball, as he was delivering, the ball slips out of Gill's hand and goes toward mid on. FOUR! Full outside off, driven in the air but safely between extra cover and mid off and it's got enough behind it to get over the rope. Dot, good length ball and Burgess misses a drive. Two, full outside off, driven past mid off, great effort by Stephan Joseph to save it just inside the rope. Dot, full outside off, driven to point. Dot, fullish length sucks Burgess into another drive but he is beaten. Bermuda 43/0 in 7.

Khan to White. Single, short and wide, slapped in front of point. Two, short and wide, slashed over gully to third man. Single, full and driven to the cover sweeper. Wide, full toss down leg side but the batsman misses out. Dot, full and defended. Two, full on the stumps, White tries to whip it through midwicket but inside edges it just past the stumps and the keeper as the ball goes to fine leg. Dot, yorker length outside off, dug out to mid off. Bermuda 50/0 in 8.

Gill to Burgess. Single, full toss outside off slammed through the covers but he picked out the sweeper on the rope. Dot, full and defended to short cover. Dot, good length ball into the pads, very good shout denied. That looked out from here. Wide, short outside off and left alone. OUT! Run out! Excellent partnership ends for Bermuda as White tries to nudge a ball to midwicket and sets off for a suicide single. The fielder charged hard and fired a direct hit to the bowler's end with White two yards short. Partnership ends at 52 and because it reached 50 Bermuda gets a bonus point. White out for 18, Bermuda 52/1 in 8.4 overs. Burgess on strike. Dot. Dot. Bermuda 52/1 in 9.

Nikhil Dutta replaces Khan from the North End, right arm off spin. Tre Manders was the new man in at the fall of the first wicket and is now on strike. Dot. Dot. Dot. OUT! Full outside off, Manders chips it in the air toward cover where Armaan Kapoor pulls off a stunning one-handed stab to his right. Manders out for a duck. Bermuda 52/2 in 9.4 overs. Oneidis Bascome is the new man in, right handed. Dot, full outside off and defended. Dot, full outside off and left alone. Wicket Maiden for Dutta. Bermuda 52/2 in 10.

Gill to Burgess. Dot. Dot. Dot, full and driven to mid off. Single, full and pushed past the bowler where mid off cuts it off for one. Bascome now on strike. Single, good length on the legs, flicked to fine leg. Single, full and driven firmly to mid off, who misfields to allow a run. Bermuda 55/2 in 11.

Dutta to Burgess. Dot, good length outside off, guided to backward point. Single, short and cut in front of point to the sweeper. Dot, full outside off and left. SIX! Full on the stumps, Bascome has a go and skies it high toward long on, just carries over the rope, which is about 15 yards in from the fence. They've pretty much left it where it was from the West Indies vs. New Zealand matches. Single, short on the stumps, Bascome backs away to cut and edges it just past the keeper. Bermuda 63/2 in 12.

Gill to Bascome. Single, full and clipped through the leg side. Leg bye, good length on the pads, off the thigh guard to fine leg. Dot, good length ball on the stumps, defended to cover. Two, full toss on the hips, flicked high over square leg but again the grass is very slow past the square and it stops well short of the rope. FOUR! Full outside off, creamed past the bowler straight down the wicket and it races away. Single, full on the legs, clipped behind square. Bermuda 72/2 in 13.

Dutta to Bascome. Dot, full and defended. Dot, full and defended. Dot, full and guided to point. Dot, full outside off, beats the outside edge on a forward defense. Dot, full and defended to point. OUT! Full on the stumps, Bascome didn't get over the ball when defending and wound up chipping it tamely in the air back toward Dutta, who dove to his right and claimed it a few inches from the ground. The umpires confer to make sure but it looked fairly straightforward. Bascome out for a quick 16. Another wicket maiden for Dutta. Bermuda 72/3 in 14. Canada claims a bonus point for getting the third Bermuda wicket before 15 overs were up. They also claimed another bonus point earlier for Kapoor's direct hit run out of White.

Trevor Manoosingh, a leg spinner, comes on to face Burgess from the Pavilion End. Joshua Gilbert is the new man in off strike. Manoosingh over the wicket to the lefty Burgess. Single, full on the stumps, slog swept to deep midwicket. Gilbert takes guard right handed. Single, flighted full outside off and stroked to long off. Two, full on the legs, hammer swept to deep midwicket, sliding stop by Gill on the rope. Around the wicket now to Burgess. Dot, full outside off, tried an ungainly reverse sweep and missed badly. SIX! Flighted on the legs, murderous slog sweep sails into the fence over the deep midwicket rope. Two, full and wide, stroked wide of long off. Bermuda 84/3 in 15.
