Cub's V Colonials
Cub's batted first and good bowling from Vinay and Sunny kept it pretty tight and we picked up a few early wickets to keep the run rate at an acceptable level. Two very good outfield catches and good ground fielding supported the bowlers well. The Cubs #3 batsman got a nice 50 after being dropped in a very difficult effort by Postie. Diving to his left he caught it 2 hands but unfortuntely dropped it as he hit the ground. On a day when we were playing one of the leagues best...everything needed to stick and the batsman made us pay.
Our fielders did great and 1st ball after the break Sunny took an absolute screamer at head height off the meat of Vivek's bat. I don't think that Vivek could believe his eyes and I don't think that Sunny has seen it yet, complete reflex and it stuck like glue! We had some hopes after that but bruiser's bowling got smashed and after being about 67-3 at the 10 over mark, Cub's put on 97 in the final 10.
Rhino made his comeback after a log injury layoff and bowled great at the death to keep the score at a respectable, but gettable 164-8.
Colonials started off well but never quite kept up the 8.2 runs per over required and lost 3 wickets in the first 10 overs to be 66-3 at the break. Needing to copy the Cub's innings to get victory we needed 10 per over. Bruiser and Hammer where at the crease and after 3 more overs had maintained the run rate...however, 2 economical overs by the Cub's spinners had us fall behind and we needed 43 off the last 3 overs, still with 7 wickets in hand. Hammer was then dismissed for a fine 60 and bruiser run out an over later for 37. In the end we lost a few wickets and the game got away from us, but all in all it was a great effort for the Colonials finishing up around 20-25 runs short.
Colonials put up a decent fight against Cubs but the consistent line and length from the Cub's bowlers made it difficult to pick up anything more than 1's and 2's. The odd boundary and 1 huge 6 by Hammer that hit the road on the full...but many more were needed.
We had to be perfect to pull of an upset, and although we didn't get there we really did play well. Especially considering we had all been out until 2am for Hammers bachelor party the night before.... mind you, we probably just proved we play better drunk than sober!
Thanks to the umpires who did a great and consistent job.
