Thumbs Down Coach

Here is another story about a coach. To say that he also is an Australian is saying 'roses are red.... ' and all the related ho hum reactions that come with it. Guru Greg, it seems, has invited the Australian team one week ealier than it's scheduled itinerary, to Jaipur to get used to the tough Indian conditions. He, the master innovator of failure, the destroyer of budding careers (Irfan Pathan anyone?), the middle finger man (instead of asking for a thumb from others, he gave them his middle finger.. such largesse!!) has actually had the gall to call his countrymen to Jaipur to help them win because he is currently employed by Cricket Australia as the chief of it's Centre of Excellence in Brisbane.

This report in DNA gives the details http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?newsid=1188252

What he forgets is that he is currently also a consultant at the Rajasthan Cricket Academy and was till recently in charge of the facility. Actually he hasn't forgotten his position at the RCA. He obviously is using it to further Australian interests. What he has forgotten is a word called 'professionalism'. What he has forgotten is that he also has some responsibility to this country as the RCA is affiliated to the BCCI. No one denies the right of the Australian cricket team to get more practice n India. The way in which it is done is what causes a frown. The BCCI, it seems, has not been intimated with this change of schedule. Obviously Lalit Modi and the RCA are equally to blame for this faux pas. But CA by bypassing all normal channels of communication, gives this entire episode a tinge of slyness. The same Australians who were cringing to tour Pakistan for the Champions trophy due to security concerns are more than happy to go to Jaipur which was a victim of bomb attacks recently, smacks of duplicity.

GG has already commented on the Roy episode. It seems he is also giving tips to the Australians about winning in India. Given the brilliant results of his tutorship in India, take it with a pinch of salt mate!!!

Isn't this a little extreme. I mean he does have some obligations to the ACB, right? Perhaps your anger is better directed at whoever it is in Rajasthan who okayed the Aussies going there?

Even then it seems a little misplaced to me...

tx dc for your comment.. I've already mentioned Modi and RCA being equally responsible for the faux pas.. I've also said that Australians have every right to get more practice.. Greg, being a part of CA now is perfectly within his rights to help the team. But my point is that he has to decide where his loyalties lie. It's a bit like one person one post funda. SMG was asked to step down from the ICC for similar reasons right.

Agree on the extremity part... But paying humongous money to foreign coaches and support staff only to be bitten back is wat frustrates one.

Greg's overall comments and actions post his Indian coaching days haven't been in good taste and one made the piece a bit more extreme keeping that in mind..

tx for the feedback again

cheers

I like the word GG - Nice , very nice !!

I wud go as far as saying tht he has been one of the worst international coaches ever..across sports.

He had enviable talent at his disposal ..ppl peaking with careers and raw talent coming to fore..Wasted it al , Talent and Opportunity

He shudve been censured for comments post Sydney Test - atleast by the Indian press

Put al blame on RCA and BCCI for his appointment coz in my opinion he compromised heavily on ethics and rules of fair play.

Hard hitting post - Just name it 'GG - The Spy'

thanks Nikhil.. Think we need some sort of 'gardening leave' clause when signing the contract with a coach..

cheers

Really surprised the way the 'GG' bashing just goes on and on. GG tried to bring in the change which was needed at that time.He might not have succeded but he atleast he got us to start thinking. There's absolutely no harm in GG inviting the Oz to India 1 week prior to their scheduled arrival as long as their stay at the RCA is okayed through the proper channels.

Satish,

thanks for your comments.. As I have mentioned somewhere, one of the reasons for the extreme position taken has been GG's behaviour post his coaching stint.. (interview about attack in Orissa; Post Sydney test comments; remarks abt the middle order before the Oz tour)

What is GG's locus standi to 'invite' Australia to Jaipur?

GG's earlier coaching stints before the Indian sojourn don't cover him with glory I believe.

Take your point about GG bashing taken to the extreme. But think this news was the tipping point..

thanks again for your comments
